Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Turns into finding the piston on my driver’s side caliper had seized, causing the pad to tear apart, destroying my rotor.

I guess this is why I periodically inspect things on my vehicles, this could have been a lot worse for the average person.

Update:

Looking at things closer last night, it seems my hoses have collapsed ( common issue on these vans ), which was causing both calipers to drag. By the looks of it I’ll be replacing the front lines again in order to change the hoses as I doubt I’ll be able to get them loose.

Just keeps getting better......

I think this is exactly what has happened to my rear brake(s). Im getting mine checked out tomorrow...the calipers have been replqced, pads looked good but I think the rotors are shot...

Periodically inspect. I rotate my tires and change my oil   diligently every 5,000 miles and do an inspection and perform maintenance, much of it preventative, and I have a couple of 20-year-old cars with a quarter million miles that I’d jump into for a thousand-mile trip without a second thought. The difficulty has become, with the Safari, finding parts. GM has discontinued most of them.

Sounds like my regimen.

I change oil, grease, and inspect every 3k on the Rally van and Acclaim. Rotate tires every 6k.

I change oil and inspect every 4k on the new van, rotate every other change.

Rotating the tires I may slack on sometimes, but the inspection is a must and I never go over mileage.

Eh. I’m not partial to either.

I have no issues with drums, they have more stopping power than 99.9% of the population will ever need, and they’re cheap.

Please tell me that was a slotted rotor, at least (or was, anyway)

yah. I tell everyone this is why you should change your own oil and rotate winter/summer tires. Have a chance to inspect everything. No one listens to me.

The Caravans have zerks to be able to be greased?

That 65 Electra had no issues stopping as many times as I wanted, it even handled “spirited” driving without issue.

They do when I upgrade to greaseable units ;)

I’ve averted so many potential hazards by maintaining/inspecting my own vehicles that having a “surprise” on the side of the road is generally limited to picking something up in a tire on the road.

I’ll never understand why people have zero interest in taking proper care of the one thing that gets them where they need to go.

It was. Stoptech slotted rotors with Akebono pads.

Which I can no longer purchase, which is very disappointing.

Can’t seem to find either.

I’ll be doing rotors, pads, and calipers on both sides just to be done with it, but I’m not sure what I’ll end up using for rotors/pads.

I liked my setup as it cooled well enough that I didn’t get fade when towing, I’m having a hard time justifying the $250+ for drilled/slotteds with good pads though.....

honestly, this is why I tell non enthusiasts to pay a couple ex tra bucks to get a GOOD mechanic. The layperson might not understand what that means or ignore it entirely when swapping wheels. The guys at the wheel and alignment shop I take m y FoST to would catch it immediately and let you know what you need.

I mean, I trust my mechanic to give the car at least some sort of look over when it is in for periodic maintenance, and I’m sure they can find things I wouldn’t, or that I would notice, but wouldn’t feel confident about diagnosing.

I think the main thing is not to skip periodic maintenance, because you not only have the value that provides, but it’s an opportunity for someone to spot potential problems as well.

Found the rotors through Stoptech: https://www.buybrakes.com/plymouth-voyager-base-1994/stoptech/brake-rotors/stoptech-rotors-slotted-high-carbon-no-warp-rotor

And Rockauto still carries the pads. Akebono ACT524.

But they no longer sell them as a kit, so they’re significantly more expensive to buy.

They carry the Akebono pads I was running, but they no longer have the Stoptech rotors.

What’s t he reason  for running slotted rotors on a mini van? A solid rotor will give you more actual stopping surface and won’t chew up the pads so quickly. If you want the rotor to be able to shed the dust faster I'd go with a drilled rotor over a slotted. But if you aren't racing, I'd go with a solid rotor. Cheaper and better all around.

Towing, hauling, brake life? Racing isn’t the sole application where keeping cool is important contrary to popular belief.

I’ve got 50k miles of hard use on these rotors/pads, if it wasn’t for the caliper/hose issue, I’d have gotten at least another 30k before they needed to be replaced. I’ve never had an issue with fade, glazing, or warping since I installed them.

Solid rotors warped, had serious fade, and glazed trying to do what I do. So actually, no they weren’t better nor cheaper.

Do I work in a shop, yes. I’d rather just spend the extra $20 a rotor to buy them already slotted though....

Fair enough.

My Golf has original rotors on it. They’re too thin to resurface. I got new ones for $15 a wheel (the drums are still fine so whatever. Do drums ever really wear out?). The Brembo branded drilled one was $42, the PowerStop drilled and slotted one was $82. I don’t really think that with a car as light as mine (2600 ish pounds?) there’d be a noticeable difference. I don’t really need the heat shedding a drilled/slotted rotor would be since it’s a street only car. Plus, it’d bump be into a not stock class if I took it autocrossing, and I don’t want to lose that  bad.

If I didn’t use it for towing/hauling and drive it hard, I would just put stock rotors on it.

After a few close calls due to overheated brakes, having to replace warped rotors, and having to replace glazed pads, I’ll stick with what works.
